What is Percy Jackson and the Olympians?
Posted by Tricia Meyer on Sunday, January 31, 2010, 7:51 | 120 views

Every other commercial break yesterday I saw an advertisement for the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians Lightning Thief movie. Have you been wondering what or who Percy Jackson even is? I did some research and discovered that Percy Jackson might just be the next Harry Potter.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an adventure and fantasy book series series by Rick Riordan. The stories are set in the United States but the characters and plots are based on Greek mythology. Currently the series has five official books as well as some spin-off books. The first book, The Lightning Thief, is the basis for the movie that is being advertised. The books revolve around a 12-year-old boy named Percy Jackson who finds out that not only did myths actually exists, they currently do still exist and he is a part of them.

The book series is great for pre-teen readers as well as adults. I’ve started reading the first book and although it isn’t written as well as Harry Potter (in my opinion), the story does suck you in and leave you wanting more. I’ll definitely be reading all 5 books!

There is also now a good deal of Percy Jackson merchandise out there, including shirts and posters. There are also some guide books that help you understand more about the series.

If you enjoyed Harry Potter or any other fantasy series, you should check out Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Just be sure to read the book before you see the movie because we all know how that goes!

    Hey Tricia,

My 11 year old has read this entire book series and I started the first book this weekend.

    It’s pretty darn fun!

    Great article.
